Big Changes to Lair Editing

We have just been working on a big overhaul to the lair editing system which should make editing lairs a lot clearer. We’ve removed most of the restrictions on lair editing so now you can:

Build single width corridors…



Build rooms within rooms…



and hopefully have a bit more fun designing your lair.

As another update we’ve changed the camera controls to allow you to adjust the camera pitch (drag the middle mouse button) while playing. The reason for the previously high angle was mostly improved performance (a low angle means rendering many more poly’s which isn’t ideal when you’re working in flash). Instead of limiting it we thought we’d let you guys choose how fast you want the game to run! On top of this we’ve increase the maximum zoom out distance. Check it out.

Well it’s been 1 week now since beta was released.  I can say I’m mostly done with Evil Genius Online.  I really tried to give it a chance, but I can’t find a reason anymore to open the game.

It’s just a grind when you open the game:

  • Click to get your gold
  • Click to ask other users for resources you can’t get otherwise
  • Assign them to new tasks
  • Send minions to bed or they are useless
  • Only build basic items as anything nice cost diamonds (real money currency)

After doing the above you close the window and wait.  A few hours later rinse and repeat.  What’s the point?  There isn’t anything fun about it that makes me want to come back.  I really wanted to get behind the game and support it if/until an Evil Genius 2.  I’ll keep reporting on the development and watch for a real Evil Genius 2, but I won’t be playing as much unless they go through some major changes.

Hot Fix Incoming

Just heard from the dev team, they will be implementing a hot fix for the game shortly. Sadly this means the game will be entering maintenance more for no longer than 1 hour.

Minion Types

It appears there are at least 3 tier levels of minions.  You start with yellow, they are the basic.  After doing enough tasks you then get auto leveled up to red dressed minions and finally I just leveled up to a purple tier minion.  I’m not sure how much more effective some are than others, but it keeps saying they are less useless.


 Has anyone gotten a higher tier minion yet?

Well I haven’t given up as of yet.  It seems there is quite a bit to do, but the build times are screwed.  Every item you construct takes a certain amount of time.  I mean 10+ minutes to build a food bar unless I spend real money to speed it up?  Again not a fan, but I know it’s how these type of games work.  Almost seems as though it would be a grind to build all you want then once you have it all built you would quit the game.  Can’t confirm obviously at this point, but just a hunch.

EGO Beta…Initial Thoughts

So at this point I’ve played the game for approximately 1 hour.  At first it was tough to even understand what to do, but after hovering and clicking through everything I started to follow.

You start with a basic abandoned lair with 3 guys in black suits.  I assumed they were my minions at first, wondered why they were not yellow, but then was told they were agents.  You click on them and click execute and they are auto killed, not by other minions, just out of thin air by a gun.  That’s a little strange to me as the immersion is missing on this part.  After they are dead you spam click on trash and other things in your lair, your minion then runs around vacuuming the messes.

After that you install a Money Launderer as that’s your source of gold income.  It’s not self sufficient as each time the green icon pops above it as in the image below you have to click so your minion will go harvest the gold out of it.  With that said it looks like you have to have the game open and running to earn gold, but that’s no different than any other game.

Now here is where it show’s it’s Facebook style nature.  As you can see in the image below, the mission takes 15 minutes to run and you do nothing but sit until it’s done unless you speed it up with diamonds that you can purchase with real money.  Not a fan of that.

That’s all for now.  I’m going to continue playing and provide feedback/screenshots.  It seems like a lot of clicking without much strategy.  Even though it’s not what us EG2 fans were hoping for it’s a start.  Now if only it can earn as much as a Farmville type game we may just get our true EG2.

Beta is up and running!

Just confirmed the beta is working now.  For those of you that are having issues (getting the 4or4 page) you have to leave the Facebook group then rejoin.

I’m going to run through it for a bit and report back my findings after I get a feel for the game. Stay tuned!
